The official base fee for the technical inspection of a passenger car (category M1) is HUF 26,700 in 2026. Added to this is the preliminary inspection fee (HUF 19,800 gross at Autovizit Kft.) and the environmental contribution (HUF 316). The total cost therefore typically comes to around HUF 42,000–53,000. All-wheel drive vehicles carry a surcharge of HUF 6,700. The inspection fee is HUF 28,100 for N1 light commercial vehicles and HUF 5,200 for motorcycles. The official fee does not cover any repair costs.

The following documents are required for the technical inspection: the registration certificate, a valid document proving compulsory third-party liability insurance, the vehicle title (if available) and a personal identity card. If a representative brings the car in, a letter of authorisation is also required. For company vehicles, a signature specimen and a company extract are needed in addition. In the case of a sale, the original sales contract must also be brought along. The authorisation forms for both private individuals and companies can be downloaded from the Autovizit website.

If the vehicle is in proper technical condition, the technical inspection can be completed within one hour at the Autovizit inspection station, and you can wait on site. Before the inspection, our colleagues review the condition of the car against the requirements of the technical inspection at no extra charge. For a new passenger car the first technical inspection is due after 4 years, and every 2 years thereafter. For a used car, validity is set at 3 years within the 3 calendar years following the year of first use, and at 2 years beyond that. It is advisable to have the inspection carried out 2–3 weeks before expiry. If you have the vehicle inspected within 30 days before expiry, the new validity period runs from the original expiry date.

It is prohibited to use a vehicle on public roads with an expired technical inspection. During a roadside check the police may withdraw the registration certificate, and the registration office issues an official decision withdrawing the vehicle from circulation. In addition, compulsory third-party liability insurance may become invalid, which means that in the event of an accident the owner has to cover the damage caused. To put a withdrawn vehicle back into circulation, you must attend the inspection station together with the official decision.

The Autovizit inspection station inspects the following vehicle categories: M1 passenger cars and M1G all-wheel drive passenger cars, N1 light commercial vehicles (under 3.5 t) and N1G off-road commercial vehicles (under 3.5 t), gas-powered (dual-fuel) vehicles, L3e motorcycles, O1 trailers, caravans and motorhomes (under 3.5 t), as well as temporarily deregistered vehicles (including those with an official decision).

During the technical inspection the examiner checks the operation of the braking system (brake bench measurement), the condition of the suspension and shock absorbers, the lighting and light-signalling devices, the steering system, the exhaust system and pollutant emissions, the integrity of the windscreen and windows, the condition of the tyres and rims, corrosion and damage to the bodywork, the seats and seat belts, and the compulsory accessories (warning triangle, high-visibility vest, first aid kit).

The most common reasons for failure are: inadequate or uneven braking performance, a damaged or cracked windscreen (in the driver’s field of vision), poor suspension condition (worn ball joints, control arms), faulty or non-working lights (headlights, indicators, brake light), excessive exhaust emissions (environmental measurement), corrosion of the load-bearing structure, worn tyres (tread depth below 1.6 mm) and a missing third brake light. Autovizit’s preliminary review helps to identify these faults before the inspection.

To prepare, check the following: the integrity of the windscreen (no crack in the driver’s field of vision), the operation of the lights (all lamps, indicators, brake light), braking efficiency, the condition of the tyres (at least 1.6 mm tread), the operation of the wipers, the horn, the presence of compulsory equipment (warning triangle, vest, first aid kit) and the legibility of the number plate. Registration is needed when a vehicle is to be used on Hungarian public roads for the first time. This applies to vehicles imported from abroad, newly purchased cars, or vehicles previously withdrawn from circulation that are to be used again. The process includes the technical inspection, the authenticity check, payment of the registration tax, taking out insurance and administration at the registration office.

On vehicles used on public roads, only the halogen bulbs of the dipped-beam and main-beam headlights may be replaced with LEDs. Replacing other bulbs (brake light, fog light, reversing light, position lights, number plate light, interior lighting) is not permitted. The LED light source must be approved for the vehicle and carry an official approval mark. The replacement must be carried out by an official service centre, and this must be certified with a technical certificate at the inspection.
